In 2014, Conservation South Luangwa established Zambia's first wildlife detection dog unit in South Luangwa, in partnership with Working Dogs for Conservation, a US-based NGO. Specialised rescue dogs were brought in from the USA and now reside in Mfuwe.

These dogs and their handlers are trained to conduct roadblock searches, intelligence-based village and building searches, border and airport searches, and area/grid searches. The dogs are currently trained to detect ivory, firearms, ammunition, pangolin scales, leopard skins, mukula wood, and certain species of bush meat.

The strong bond between the handlers and the dogs, along with their dedication to the project, has led to immediate and tangible results.
