I often have family and friends over for dinner or events. A placemat is a standard part of how we set the table. Over the last year I must have ordered about six or more sets of placemats and am plagued with common problem. I believe in time all placemats will get dirty and stained and very few can hold up to constant use so sooner or later they go in the trash can even though they looked elegant at one time. Most placemats, even vinal, will sooner or later have an issue with cleaning. Especially bad are the placemats that don't lie flat like woven ones that have an edge. Someone puts their glass down askew and over it goes getting the table cloth and placemat doused with wine or whatever was in that glass. To me the five star cotton placement in this review is a perfect solution and I no longer search to replace my mats with other brands. I use a flat wipeable and scrubbable faux leather placemats for general home use and these get pulled out when I have company. The pros and cons should tell the story.PROS- There are no edges to the cotton placemat and thus nothing that is likely to topple a glass over when it is askew of the placemat and table. Look at the photo where the goblet is deliberately place on the mat askew. It won't topple over.- The mat is almost 13x18 and a good size to hold a large dinner plate, napkin, silverware, goblet, and one or two side dishes.- The mat has a tight weave and can usually be cleaned with a damp cloth and reused. Other cloth placemats with a open or woven weave can be difficult to clean as good and particle get embedded in the placemat. Woven PVC placemats look cheap and are difficult to clean and dry.- When the mat gets too soiled (especially with a greasy gravy or substance) it can just be tossed or recycled. The price point is reasonable per mat to do this. That said, even my expensive placemats bit the dust in a few months, especially if they are think or made of felt.- The mats look attractive, I last guest who visited me took a photo of the elegant table setting of which this placemat contributed to the look.- These cotton placements are priced and suitable for large gatherings. They may not be the fanciest placemats but they are certainly functional and blend value with aesthetics. Many of my fancy placemats were finally given away or trashed especially the ones that were woven or had edges.CONS- I don't find that they do well after going into a washer or dryer. If they don't look good after a wipe down with a sponge I recycle them.
